Steps to get a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Class A CDL: A Class A CDL is required to operate trucks or truck combinations weighing 26,001 lbs or more, and towing a vehicle/unit over 10,000 lbs.
Steps
Step 1: Obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit

Each state has their own requirements and regulations. Be sure to get a manual for the state you will be getting your CDL.

2. Now there are three licenses to choose from: Class A, B, or C. Each Class license associates with the size and type of commercial vehicle being driven.
3. You can now go to the DMV and apply for a CLP after reviewing the handbook manual and make sure to bring the following documents: a Florida driver’s license, proof of identity and residency, proof of your social security number and pass the DOT Physical exam.

Step 3: Take Tour CDL Skills Test

After completing your CDL Training program its time to take your final test, the Skills Test. The following will be on the Skills Test:

Pre-Trip Inspection: You will have to demonstrate that you are able to inspect a commercial vehicle to make sure it is safe to operate and take on the road.

Basic Control Skills: Several maneuvers will be done with the commercial vehicle including:
- Straight Line Backing
- Offset Backing
- Parallel Parking (Depending on State’s Requirements)
- Road Test: In the final part of your skills test you will drive out onto public roads with your examiner and demonstrate your ability to operate the commercial vehicle following traffic laws.
